Extract

The example of the WORK-L 800-3 linear pallet storage system from WASSERMANN TECHNOLOGIE shows that automation solutions are not just for large companies and series manufacturers. Toolmaker Hofmann in Hildburghausen. Founded in 1991 by Stephan Hofmann and now employing a total of 15 people, the company took the pioneering step into automation in 2025.

The company’s core business is the production of injection molds for a wide range of industries. Each end product looks different because it is an individualized solution for the respective customer. So there is no question of large batch sizes. Instead, flexibility and high cost-effectiveness are required in order to meet the high level of competition in toolmaking from the Far East.

For Werkzeugbau Hofmann, these framework conditions could only be implemented by taking the logical step of using two technologies: 5-axis technology on the one hand, which drastically reduces the number of set-ups and machining times– which is why the company now uses a Hermle C 42 and a GROB G 550. On the other hand, both machines are connected to a fully automatic pallet storage system, which enables set-up parallel to machining time and the stocking of pre-set pallets for unmanned production. The automation has enabled the company to significantly increase its machine running times and spindle hours.

The linchpin here is the linear pallet storage system from WASSERMANN, which currently has 36 spaces on 3 levels. Today, Werkzeugbau Hofmann uses 500 x 630 mm pallets, but this may change in the future if further machines are connected. It is also worth mentioning that different types of machines from different manufacturers can be integrated into the WORK-L. The flexible pallet handling device loads the workpiece carriers directly onto the respective machine table, which in turn significantly reduces the footprint of the machines by eliminating the need for a double pallet changer.

Thanks to the intuitive cell control system from WASSERMANN, variant diversity and productivity are no longer mutually exclusive at Werkzeugbau Hofmann. Software modules for planning the production sequence, a forward-looking resource check, e.g. for the CNC programs used, the tools and devices and the OEE analysis tool for production optimization have become important components in the company’s production process.

All in all, the company has taken a strategic step into the future with the WORK-L 800-3 automatic pallet storage system from WASSERMANN TECHNOLOGIE. With this investment, increased flexibility and rising productivity have become a reality for Werkzeugbau Hofmann.
